Animal Assisted counseling

Animal Assisted Counseling (AAC) includes animals as therapeutic agents in the therapy process. It is a theory based approach to working with clients and involves a trained therapist working with an animal as a team. The AAC team uses the therapeutic powers of Human-Animal-Interactions to help clients resolve challenges and achieve growth. Human-Animal-Interactions have been found to increase resilience and empower us to thrive. Dr. Seawell, Cooper, and Henry have all undergone advanced training to be able to provide AAC as a psychotherapy service. During your work in AAC sessions there will be ongoing interactions between you, your therapist, and either Cooper or Henry who will be partnering with Dr. Seawell as a co-therapist. AAC involves goal oriented and structured interventions and is associated with multiple benefits including reductions in anxiety, stress, and depression. A client’s personal awareness can be enhanced by the way the animal responds to their interactions with them. In many cases clients may be able to achieve goals they might not have without the aid of an animal in session. Participation in AAC can reduce the stress of therapy for clients and may allow for quicker and greater recovery. Clients involved in AAC may experience a greater sense of comfort and be more relaxed during the therapy process. As a result it can be easier to open up, more motivating to return to therapy, and easier to build therapeutic rapport. Two of the greatest assets animals bring to therapy are the capacity and desire to nurture people, and the ability to detect and signal emotional distress.

Cooper

Canyoncrest Justice Mini Cooper (best known as Cooper) is a black and tan Cavalier King Charles Spaniel who is certainly not mini in size or personality! His sweet, playful, and larger than life personality simply do not fit in the typical cavalier sized body. Cooper loves making new friends and has never met a stranger. He has a true talent for making anyone who stops long enough to pay attention to him feel as if they are the most important person in his universe. People have walked away saying, “No one will ever make me feel as loved as Cooper does.” He was also gifted with the ability to see both wonder and beauty in everything he encounters. Cooper’s curiosity has led to some very endearing antics and times where he simply could not limit his focus to one of the excitements happening around him. However, his fascination with life is a fully positive force and when he has something to achieve - Cooper just keeps trying. Cooper knows that no matter what you encounter in life, the way you tell your story, especially to yourself, is what makes all the difference.

Henry

Mr. Handsome Henry is a tri-color cavalier King Charles Spaniel who was found wandering the streets in a small town in Northern Arkansas. He was in bad shape and not a lot is known about his previous life. We do know that prior to coming through rescue he endured many hardships. He now has a lot to share about being rescued by love. Henry can often be found soaking up the good life with one of his superpower snores! He loves giving and receiving gentle affection, talking Cooper into a round of chase with one of his many favorite toys, and showing off with an occasional case of the zoomies. Henry has come a long way and he has an empowering story of strength and resilience. And just like Cooper, Henry firmly believes that the way you live your story makes all the difference.
